mwbamwbqRubidgea è un mwbggenere estinto di mwbwterapsidi, appartenente ai mwcagorgonopsi. Visse nel mwcqPermiano superiore (circa 259 - 254 milioni di anni fa) e i suoi resti fossili sono stati ritrovati in mwcgSudafrica.

Descrizione

Questo terapside carnivoro era di grandi dimensioni: il solo mwdgcranio era lungo oltre 45 centimetri, e la lunghezza dell'esemplare in vita poteva raggiungere e oltrepassare i 3 metri. Il cranio di mwdwRubidgea era dotato, come quello di tutte le forme simili (mweaGorgonopsia) di due lunghe mweqzanne superiori caniniformi, che oltrepassavano la profondità della mwegmandibola quando le fauci erano chiuse. Queste due zanne erano lunghe oltre 15 centimetri, e oltrepassavano quindi in lunghezza i denti dei grandi dinosauri carnivori come mwewmwfaTyrannosaurus rex. Il cranio era dotato di grandi finestre temporali per accogliere i potenti muscoli delle fauci.

Classificazione

Il genere mwfwRubidgea venne istituito nel mwga1948 da mwgqRobert Broom, che descrisse alcuni fossili ritrovati nella zona del mwggKarroo, in Sudafrica. La mwgwspecie tipo descritta da Broom, proveniente dalla "mwhamwhqCistecephalus zone", è mwhgmwhwRubidgea atrox. Altre specie vennero descritte pochi anni dopo (mwiaR. platyrhina, mwiqR, majora) da Brink e Kitching (1953), ma successivamente sono state attribuite alla specie tipo. Nel 2007, uno studio riguardante i gorgonopsi operato da Gebauer ha messo in luce notevoli somiglianze tra le specie mwigmwiwDinogorgon quinquemolaris, mwjamwjqTigrisaurus pricei e mwjgRubidgea atrox, tali da permettere l'attribuzione delle prime due al genere mwjwRubidgea. Altri studi (Kammerer, 2016) hanno indicato invece che almeno la specie mwkaD. quinquemolaris fosse identica alla specie tipo di mwkqDinogorgon, mwkgD. rubidgei.

mwmqRubidgea è un rappresentante derivato del gruppo dei gorgonopsi, un gruppo di terapsidi tipici del Permiano e caratterizzati da lunghi canini e attitudini predatorie, ed è il genere eponimo dei Rubidgeinae, il clade più derivato del gruppo.
